The city of Orlando is the county seat of Orange County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 185,951 (metropolitan area 1,644,561). A 2005 U.S. Census Estimates population count gave the city population was 213,233 (metropolitan area over 1.8 million). It is the sixth-largest city in Florida, and its largest inland city. It is also at the head of the Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Orlando-Kissimmee MSA is Florida's third-largest metropolitan area, behind Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater. However, a new poll by Quinnipiac University shows that President Barack Obama is looking at a tight re-election race next November whether the Republican nominee is Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney. In either case, the candidates are in a statistical tie in Quinnipiac's survey of registered voters taken between Nov. 28 and Dec. 5.
Missing mom's cell phone found

ORLANDO (AP) — The cell phone of a missing Florida mother has been found.
Authorities have been searching for Michelle Parker after she disappeared on Nov. 17. That was the same day an episode of "The People's Court" aired in which Parker and her former fiance argued over whom was responsible for the cost of a missing engagement ring.
On Wednesday, Parker's family said her cell phone had been found but authorities wouldn't say where or when.

After being sentenced in November for spray painting graffiti on the Castillo de San Marcos, a Jacksonville man has written a letter of apology to St. Augustine residents.
Scott Hill, 22, is one of two men who judges have ordered to write letters of apology for “tagging” St. Augustine landmarks.
Study: State Medicaid premiums too high

MIAMI — New premiums and copay proposals for Florida Medicaid beneficiaries, including $100 for every non-emergency ER visit, are among the highest in the country and a new study warns it could cause hundreds of thousands to drop out because they can’t afford to pay them, according to a report released Wednesday by Georgetown University.
“This is a very radical proposal which would undermine the progress Florida has made in covering children,” said Joan Alker, co-executive director of the Georgetown University research center.

Environmentalists say the state's proposal is too weak to control algae blooms that are choking Florida's waters. The state Environmental Regulation Commission is set to vote on it today.

A single mother of a 2-year-old girl wants her daughter to have Christmas this year, something she did not have last year.
“I didn’t have any money to get her anything last Christmas,” the mother wrote in her application to the Empty Stocking Fund. “If you could help us it would mean a lot to me and my little girl. I love her so much. It just saddens me to see my baby not have anything to play with….”
